Design for Conservation

Design for Conservation is a research initiative, started by Ashley Scott Kelly in 2011, aimed at using methods and histories unique to the design disciplines to debate tensions between environmental conservation and rural development. The Design for Conservation website will soon be host to work-to-date, as well as strategies and outputs ahead. This research is supported by the University of Hong Kong.

Architecture and design culture have rarely (though at key moments, Ian McHarg, etc) entered the discussion on national park "design" and management. Recent projects, such as those launched by the Van Alen Institute in Parks for the People, demonstrate the need for rekindled stewardship of what large quasi-natural territories remain in our global commons.
